Who is Ryan Martin?

I’m an investigative journalist in Indianapolis working as deputy managing editor at Mirror Indy. Previously, I was an editor and investigative reporter at the Indianapolis Star.

So I spend a lot of time reporting the news and thinking about journalism. But I’m not here to talk about my career (that’s what LinkedIn is for); this Substack is for something else.

So what is Ryan Martin: Rough Draft?

It’s a place for all my thoughts and personal stories that will almost never make it into a published piece of journalism.

Think of it as a blog circa 2010, back when you could find writing built on ideas and emotions, not keywords and affiliate links.

Why Substack?

I’ve always found the best way to process my feelings is by writing them down. And the second best way is by talking through them with others.

Once upon a time, social media provided that avenue for all of us. Now, though, the algorithms are packed with supplements, violence and outrage.

So, my rough draft will spill onto the Substack page. Hopefully, we’ll find community together here.
